慎重に埃を払ったネガとガラスキャリアを引き伸ばし機にかけ、レンズの絞りをチェック、タイマーを300秒にセットする。
明かりを消して、ほの赤いセーフライトの光の下で、床に設置した特大イーゼルに真っ白い印画紙を挿み、不用意な振動を与えないようにそっとスタートボタンを押す。
ぼぅっ、と画像が浮かび上がる。
ニヤリと不敵に笑う巨大なカボチャ “Laughing pumpkin Jaw”
引き伸ばし機が揺れないよう、息を詰め、静かに座ってタイマーの数字を眺めていると、ケタケタと乾いた笑い声が聞こえてきて、印画紙の上のアイツがオレに喋りかけてきた。
「おい、そんなシケた面すんなよ。この髭面カボチャ野郎。ケタケタ」
「ナンやねん、それ。うるさいわ。このドテカボチャ！」と、怒鳴り返そうと思ったとたん、パチンと音がして、アイツは消えた。
露光終了。
我に返ったオレの目の前には、ほの赤いセーフライトに照らされた、何も映っていない巨大な印画紙があるだけ。
夢？ 300秒の露光の間、居眠りをしていたのか？
15分後、定着を終えて予備水洗のために広げられた印画紙の上で、声こそ聞こえてこないけど、アイツはやっぱりオレを小バカにするように静かに不敵な笑みを湛えていた。
